Superhero Mascot Sticker

During my time employed as an ecommerce specialist at smash.gg, I created various products for our limited-run crowdfunding esports shops. This page documents the conceptualization and process behind a sticker illustration for a large client's shop.

Project Overview

Tools Used: Adobe Photoshop, Cintiq 13HD

For most of our client's shops, smash.gg would offer to add our products to the shop as a value-add to help clients meet their fundraising goals. This client had a superhero-themed shop, and so smash.gg worked to develop our own superhero-themed merchandise to add to the shop and match the client's theme.

We decided on adding a sticker sheet to the shop as a low-cost product option. A coworker designed comic book versions of the smash.gg logos, while I was tasked with creating a superhero illustration for the sheet.

Concept: Smash.gg doesn't have any mascots, but they do have an unofficial, "intern" in the form of an inflatable dinosaur toy named Bean that lives in one of the company offices and makes appearances to take the blame for small typos and other mistakes on social media. For my illustration, I decided to turn Bean into a superhero.

Process: Using my Cintiq tablet, I sketched out a skeleton for Bean in Photoshop, then used the Pen tool to create a thick, bold outline. While colouring, I simulated a comic book print effect by using the Colour Halftone filter to fill the canvas with dots, then removed them as necessary. Finally, I applied the smash.gg logos to Bean's cape by transforming it in accordance with the shading, and cutting out and displacing pieces that are further or closer to the viewer. The logo on the hat was redrawn by hand.
